Gold Coast City, it is time to spring clean your bookshelves and donate your pre-loved books for Robina’s Bond University’s ‘Great Book Swap’, taking place on Wednesday 17 September 2014.

In partnership with the Bond Library, Bond Indigenous Awareness Society (BIAS) will collect book donations until Tuesday 16 September 2014, which will be sold for a gold coin donation at Wednesday’s community event.

All proceeds from the second hand book sale will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, a community organisation that delivers literacy resources and books to Indigenous children living in isolated and remote regions of Australia.

According to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Indigenous children in remote locations are substantially behind students in metro locations in terms of literacy skills. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation are committed to raising literacy levels through a community level focus and whilst supporting first language and culture.

Given that only 1 in 5 Northern Territory Indigenous kids from remote communities can read at an acceptable level, it’s worth dusting off your old books and donating them to this very good cause.

Local Indigenous elders will attend Wednesday’s Great Book Swap to speak at the event, along with Bond University Head Librarian Wendy Abbott and Pro-Vice Chancellor Alan Finch, who will give a welcome speech at 10.30am. BIAS are also extending an invitation to the Robina and Gold Coast City community to come along and be part of the day.

Share your cherished books story by telling its future owner what you loved about it and complete one of the Great Book Swap’s bookplates to stick in the front of your donated book.

According to Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, ‘literacy is a key lever of change and a practical tool of empowerment on each of the three main pillars of sustainable development: economic development, social development and environmental protection’.

Help Bond University, BIAS and Indigenous Literacy Foundation empower Indigenous kids living in remote communities through literacy resources and skill development.

To donate your pre-loved books, please drop into Bond University’s Main or Law Library anytime until 16 September.

To attend the Wednesday’s Great Book Swap, come along to Bond University Main Library between 10am and 2pm.
